10 Ideas For Recycling Pillowcases

Picture of Pillows - Tipnut.com

  1. Pack camping gear, hiking boots and supplies, make them into placemats for camping trips, trunk storage bags
  2. If the pillowcases are cotton, cut them up and make Microwave Heating Pads, Hotpads, Oven Mitts, make your own Buckwheat Hull Pillows or little cuddle cushions for the tv room or car
  3. Laundry helpers: make simple drawstring bags out of them and use for holding dirty laundry or wash delicates inside the pillowcase bags
  4. Make tote bags, beach bags, Halloween Treat Bags, shopping bags, Simple Garment Bags (pdf) or Laundry Bags
  5. Use to stuff or line Pet Beds, Doggy Deodorizers or make pet pillows
  6. Use them for protecting fragile items in storage or when moving
  7. Cut them open and use as dust covers, slip covers or drop cloths for small items and areas – also use to cover bedding plants and garden during frost dangers. Rip into strips and use as plant ties during growing season.
  8. Make Clothespin Bags, Aprons, Rag Rugs, add clever pockets to things (#7 on list), Toteable Towels (you’ll need a towel too) (#50 on list), lots of crafty things on this list and this one too
  9. Open them up and give them to the kids, they’ll make super hero capes and build forts and all that fun stuff
  10. Make seat cushions for patio furniture, wooden chairs, boat seats

There are plenty of ideas to reuse and recycle pillowcases, especially if the bulk of the fabric is still sturdy and in good shape. If the fabric is faded and not very pretty anymore, choose projects where prettiness doesn’t matter–like the camping and traveling ideas, garden covers or laundry helpers.

If you find your household never seems to have enough pillowcases on hand for their original purpose – bedding – why not try your hand at making your own (#33 on the list) using new fabric or recycling old sheets that are still in good condition.

You can also use old pillowcases to cover your sewing machine!!!

I have used old pillow cases for cleaning ceiling fan blades. Just slip it over the blade and dust away. This way the dust stays in the bag and not all over the floor.

My ex ripped my favorite vintage pillowcase… I was so upset! Then I realized I could repurpose it into a Christmas stocking. (This was several Decembers ago). I proudly display it every year :)

You can sew two together-length wise, leave a hole in the top seam for a hanger and use as a dust protector for storing winter coats, dresses, etc.

One pair of matching pillow cases will make a jacket with a collar, a blouse, a sundress, a skirt and vest, or a pair of pants with a vest for a little girl up to size 4. The solid colored pillow cases will make shirts and spring vests for a boy about the same size. One twin flat sheet will make about three outfits for a child up to size 6X, a summer dress up to size 12 for an adult. Sometimes they are “off grain,” and you may need to rip them into grain if necessary. But today’s sheets (Newer than 1970!) are usually on grain and ready to sew! The thick binding at the opening of pillow cases make really pretty collars, cuffs and waistbands!

I think all of these utility ideas for pillow cases are great! For those folks who don’t have any children around or any grandchildren, there are going to be plenty of families out there who have children needing school clothes and play clothes. I can’t think of a more useful way to recycle this no-iron cotton!
