40 Household Jobs In 5 Minutes or Less
Today’s feature is from Woman’s Day Magazine with 40 Household Jobs In 5 Minutes or Less, I’ve also included another 12 ideas below:
You’ve done it, you know you have: looked at a messy room, sighed and walked away. Just thinking about cleaning the house is enough to exhaust, and deter, most of us. Then one day it hit me: I could clean my entire refrigerator (a job that always seemed overwhelming) one shelf, and a few minutes, at a timeāand never feel the pain. I began timing other routine housekeeping tasks and found that almost all can be broken into five-minute “bites.” You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish in such a short amount of time.
A quick peek at some of the 5 minute jobs listed:
- Change the linens on one bed
- Bathroom: Toilet Tidy-Up
- Declutter and tidy a small, or half of a large, under-sink cupboard.
- Iron one cotton shirt, spraying with water or steam as you go.
- Gather old newspapers and magazines and prep them for recycling or donation.
- Clean the top and blades of a ceiling fan with a damp soft rag.
12 more ideas from Tipnut:
- Wash the cutlery organizer and replace utensils neatly
- Dust tv & computer screens
- Do a quick wipe inside the microwave (the more you do this, the less you’ll need to do this)
- Wipe down a chair for pet hair
- Wash your broom
- Wash and wipe down the outside of the washer and/or dryer
- Shake out and sweep an entrance mat
- Dust some lampshades
- Wipe down a door or two, top to bottom–both sides
- As FlyLady suggests, clean out your kitchen sink, wash it then polish it to a shine
- Give your kitchen drain a boost (monthly recipe found at the bottom of this post)
- Wash out a small garbage pail or can (inside and out)

Hate the odor of your oven after cleaning it ? Just wipe the inside of your oven with vinegar after cleaning and all of the chemical odor will disappear. Voile !
Pick up ten things and deposit where they should really be.
Open your mail close to where it can be dealt with the first time: for example – unwanted brochures and junk mail, straight into recycling, bills into your accordian file/handbag/diary, postcards straight up on the ‘fridge, documents straight into the filing cabinet. Try to handle only once.
Keep you shopping list up-to-date, either on your ‘fridge, via a magnetic list, or in your diary. I usually pick Thursdays for writing up my shopping list, and pile in the information all through the week onto that one page.
Detail what you are going to do tomorrow. Use your diary. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Just pick a very loose ten things, giving yourself plenty of time in which to do them. Make three of them major, but set a half hour time limit, three medium, with a fifteen minute time limit, and three minor with a five minute time limit. The last one is a bonus one that you use for you as a reward. Don’t make it chocolate! A few minutes break doing something you’ve been putting off rewarding yourself with. For some people, it may be a spot of gardening. For others, catching up with a crossword puzzle or a magazine article. Or you may wish to go mad and beat up a punching bag!
Go get the cobwebs in your house. Nothing says “unkempt” quite as much as these otherwise graceful grey ghosts draping under your ceiling. Make sure that you do your bathroom last, in case the ceiling is damp. You don’t want to put damp and dirty marks all over your other ceilings!
Tidy a shelf. Videos, DVDs, books, cassette tapes.
Found a link to your site from one my favorite sites and I’ve been coming back ever since. I love your house cleaning tips! I just read “10 Secrets to Rewarding Homemaking” and was relieved to see that I’m not alone in feeling overwhelmed with the drudgery of homemaking. As a recent stay at home mom (I’d been in the work force for 21 years)there are days when I really need to remind myself how important it is to my family to have me at home and not at work. Keep up the fantastic work!
Great tips Leonie & Ann, thank you for adding them!
Thanks 1dustbunnydiva for your kind words

My day is made up of little jobs seems like I get more done that way. Thanks for the reminder the lampshades really need to be done.
Wipe down your return air vent and change the filter if needed.
Go through your medicine cabinet and throw anything old out.
Wash the pollen off patio table.
Take down anything outdated on the family bulletin board.
Sweep off the front porch or the deck.
Wash a window or two each day until they are all done.
My favourite motto when cleaning the house is “Don’t put it down, put it away”. You’ll save yourself so much time only moving things once. It does result in walking around the house with your handbag, mobile phone and keys for five minutes when you get home from work though, because inevitably there’s something else that needs doing first (usually the dog needing to take a whiz! LOL).
