Balloon Luminaries
Now how cool are these! Today’s feature is a tutorial from CandleTech for Water Balloon Luminaries:
A fun and easy project with a beautiful payoff. Learn how to make these Balloon Luminaries.
Here’s a summary of how you make these:
- Fill a balloon with some water
- Slowly dip the balloon in melted paraffin wax (only up to the water line so the balloon won’t pop); you can use dye to make colored luminaries
- Re-dip a few times to build up a few layers of wax (allowing some time between dippings for layers to cool)
- Carefully set the balloon on a paper-lined cookie sheet and allow to cool a bit so a bottom base is made; re-dip a few more times in melted paraffin
- Allow the wax to cool, then pop the balloon (remove the balloon bits)
- Set a tea light inside and there you have it, a nice luminary!

When I was in 5th grade, we made jack-o-lanterns this way. We added orange crayon to the paraffin. After the paraffin was “set” and we popped the balloons, we carved faces in our little orange “bowls” to complete the project.
