Bonnet Gal Towel Patterns: Applique & Embroidery

Here is the latest series of vintage embroidery patterns from my personal collection: Days Of The Week Bonnet Gals. These are a bit different as they also include patterns for applique work (on the dresses and the hats). Very sweet pattern set that is from the 1930’s or 1940’s. Each Wednesday morning I’ll have a new pattern from the series for you to download. Here are the original pattern details:

Bonnet Gals Days Of The Week Towel Patterns

This pattern contains motifs to be done in applique with plain embroidery or entirely in plain embroidery. They are to be used on kitchen towels. Linen toweling is the best material to use with gingham, handkerchief linen, muslin or a similar cotton material for applique patches. Use six strand cotton for embroidery.

Material Requirements:

  • One towel 1 yard 18 inch material
  • Six strand cotton in each color used

Applique Patterns:

A dress pattern is given for each motif differently posed. There are three poses. These patterns must be cut out and used as a tissue pattern would be used. A pattern is given for each of the bonnets. These must be transferred on contrasting material.

Embroidery:

Follow color suggestions and for applique cut out patches on the outer line; the inner broken line is the finishing line. Slash edges at intervals. Turn under edges and baste in place to motif. Catch patch to article with an outline stitch. Continue embroidery as follows: work continuous lines, outline stitch; single lines, single stitch; dots, French knots; broken lines running stitch.

Color Suggestions:

The motifs may be done entirely in black with only the applique patches in a color or they may be done in various colors such as: Dresses, any bright or pastel color: (Use figured material for applique) bonnets, any bright or pastel color matching or contrasting with the dresses. (Use plain material for applique) clothes on line, clothes being ironed and parasol, some color to harmonize with dress and bonnet; mop, grey; mop handle, and bucket, some bright color; pin cushion, red; fire, blue, orange and yellow; dish-pan, gray or a color to harmonize with dress and bonnet; grass, green; flowers, orange, yellow, blue or violet with yellow or brown centers; finish motifs in black.
