Before you start, practice the braid by making a miniature version of the mat with thinner rope. When you’re ready to make the big mat, cover a large work surface with kraft paper.
I love the design of the mat but thought the directions could use a little more help so I searched online a bit and found this easy to follow video from marinews.com: Ocean Plait Mat:
The Ocean Plait Mat makes a most decorative entrance for any home or galley. Length and width are easily varied, however, you will gobble up rope quickly in its making. To give you a broad idea, using half inch rope, you would require about 50 ft to make one square foot of matting!
To finish this mat you should whip the ends and sew them to the underside of the mat.
