Picture Of Lavender Envelope [thegivingflower.de] - Tipnut.comMaterials Needed

Rosemary
Lavender Buds
Thyme
Lemongrass
Peppermint
Tansy
Cedar Chips

Cheesecloth, Muslin drawstring bags or fabric envelopes (free pattern download below)

Directions

  • Fill small drawstring bags to hold between 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup of the herb mixture.
  • Place bags in your pantry, closets, drawers, chests, under beds, hang in kitchen windows. You could also place the herbs in open, decorative bowls and place them in rooms.
  • Roughly scrunch the bags periodically to help release their smells.
  • Refill bags once they are no longer effective or hold no aroma.

The herb mixture helps to naturally deter and repel bugs and pests from the places you have stored the bags.

The picture above is from a free pattern for making pretty fabric envelopes to hold your lavender and herbs in, perfect for this purpose! You can find the pattern here (pdf), source: The Giving Flower.

  1. Patricia says:

    where do you get tansy?

  2. TipNut says:

Hi Patricia, you can order tansy at a herb store and on ebay. A local greenhouse may have it too.

  3. Debby says:

Does this help with the little, tiny ants? What about centapedes and silverfish? I have small children and am trying to stay away from pesticides.

  4. TipNut says:

Hi Debby, the rosemary is really good for the silverfish, as well as the lavender. The mix should help with centipedes too, ants might need more citrus ingredients like orange and lemon peels and wash areas with a citrus infused water.

If you have a pest problem though you will need to eradicate it since these bags will not solve household infestation problems.

(sorry it took so long for your comment to show–it was stuck in my comment filters).

  5. Ragbird says:

What a great idea, I can’t wait to make some.

How long approximately would they last before needing a refill?

  6. TipNut says:

    About 3 months Ragbird.

  7. Elaine says:

One thing that works great for a pantry that I noticed was not included in the herb mixture is bay leaves. They are so large that you can put one in any open box and take them out easily. Since I started doing this, I never have a problem.
