Picture of Cheese Grater - Tipnut.comI’m sure we all do fine cleaning our cheese graters, but here is a collection of tips that will help make the job easier for the stubborn hole cloggers, one or two might be new to you.

First the standard way to clean a cheese grater (as I know it):

Brush off as much of the loose bits as you can, both on the inside and outside of the grater (I just do this by hand–carefully). Then soak the grater in hot soapy water. Take a nylon scrub pad or dish brush and scrub away. On the inside of the grater, you can scrub both up and down–but on the outside, be careful when scrubbing so you don’t rip up the cleaning tool you’re using.

How To Clean & Unclog A Cheese Grater

  • Grate a raw potato or apple after you’re done grating cheese. This helps unplug the cheese or gunky bits from the holes on the grater.
  • Spray non-stick cooking spray on the grater before you start grating the cheese. This helps clean the cheese out of the grater quicker, just a few quick dunks in warm, soapy water and the cheese should pop out.
  • Use a nylon brush dish scrubber and scrub the inside of the grater, the cheese should come out of the holes fairly easily.
  • Use a toothbrush set aside just for cleaning the grater.
  • Too many gunky, clingy bits that just won’t release from the grater holes cleanly? Try freezing the grater for a few hours, then scrubbing off the frozen bits.
