15+ DIY Backsplash Ideas & Tutorials: {For The Kitchen}

Here’s a bunch of different ideas for updating the kitchen backsplash wall, nearly all come with detailed instructions for how to complete the job yourself. There’s a little bit of everything in this collection (ceramic tile, painted glass, pebbles, brick, etc.) with some pretty nifty (and thrifty) ideas. As always, I’ll be adding to this project list as I find new goodies. Have fun!

Wallpaper Backsplash [1]: Looking for a budget DIY? This is about as inexpensive as it gets yet the results can still be quite lovely.

Bead Board Panels [2]: No tutorial provided but I included it in this list for inspiration, I think it looks great! Use bead board by itself or add a decorative tile border.

Painted Glass [3]: Here’s a tip to spray paint the back of a sheet of glass with multiple coats of Krylon in the color of your choice. Seal with clear silicon sealant.

Framed Prints [4]: Photocopy images of your choosing then frame in flexible-glass frames. The frames are mounted onto the wall with photo mounting strips and hung by small nails.

Subway Tile How-To [5]: Cheap and easy project using simple white subway tiles. Tutorial includes lots of pictures and details to walk you through the project.

Tin Tiles [6]: Decorative tin tiles are measured and cut to size with tin snips then applied to the wall with construction adhesive.

Garden Stones [7]: Square tiles of stones are used (purchased) and applied to the backsplash wall with tile setting mat from the hardware store, grout is used to fill in all the spaces between the stones.

Glass Pebbles [8]: You can use pebbles, seashells, buttons, sea glass, pennies, etc., with this technique. Items are applied to clear mounting sheets, mastic is applied to wall then pebble sheets and grout applied.

Peel & Stick Tiles [9]: Tutorial shows you how to prep the wall surface, apply the tiles, apply the grout then clean. Gives a few tips for tackling tricky areas (windows & openings, outlets, etc.).

Vinyl Photo Backsplash [10]: Ermmm, hmmm. Not my style but maybe I just don’t have the imagination to make this work ;). Definitely an interesting idea!

Mosaic Kitchen Makeover [11]: Broken bits of glass and ceramics are used (pick up old pieces at thrift stores, garage sales, etc.), arranged in a pattern then applied to wall with mortar then finished off with grout.

Plexiglass & Decorative Paper [12]: This is a video tutorial using custom cut Plexiglas and decorative wallpaper. Apply to wall with screws or seal in with caulking.

Faux Tile [13]: Love the look of tile but aren’t confident you can pull it off? Here’s a way you can have the look using drywall mud, interior latex primer and paint. For durability, finish off with clear coat (optional).

Painted Wood Slats [14]: Easy peasy project! Simply nail wooden slats to the wall (evenly spaced) then paint. I think it looks awesome!

DIY Brick Backsplash [15]: Chicken wire is stapled to the wall, thin set applied and allowed to dry before sticking thin cut brick to the wall with mortar.

Ceramic Tile How-To [16]: Gives tips for planning out the design, choosing tiles, installing them with adhesive or mastic and then applying grout. Also references a helpful video tutorial.
