If you think this is too deep, why not just suggest using a more appropriate container? Or perhaps add river rocks to the bottom? I live on Cape Cod, and use smooth stones from the beach in my bird bath, which also raises them above debris and dirt. The birds stand on the stones to wash and drink, they and seem to love my bird bath.

If the birdbath is too deep put a small dish or glass or pretty rock in the middle so the birds can climb up on them to get out.

This birdbath is terrible! A birdbath for regular little birds should be NO deeper than 2 INCHES. Little birds need to drink and they cannot drink from this.

PLUS: with such steep sides and no texture, if they fall in or try to get a drink or bath, they will drown!

I'm surprised that this design is still making the rounds.
Too deep = they drown
Too steep = they can't climb out (and drown)
Please remove this from your blog - Many thanks.
P.S. I love your site but I love birds more:)

Great idea ! We just finished ours and are waiting for the birds. We used a clear plastic platter. The thought occured to me, why not glue another floor flange to the bottom of a tray to use as a feeder in the winter months? I just might give it a try.

I like the vintage glass cover idea too! But I was thinking on behalf of the birds and was wondering if an inch to 2 inch rim (preferably flat) would give them a place to stand instead of perching on a rim? Hummmm..probably a no brainer for someone besides me. Hee Hee!

this would be a good project for the vintage glass light covers that I never could think of what to use them for.
