DIY Sewing & Quilting Table – On The Cheap!
Today’s feature is from Crazy Shortcut Quilts with tips and full instructions for putting together a DIY Quilting Desk:
I don’t have the room or the money for a huge expensive sewing cabinet, and being the innovative person that I am, I created my own design for a sewing table and because I work hard at my craft, I call it my Quilting Desk.
I started with 2 relatively inexpensive folding tables from SAM’S Club ($42 each in Anchorage, Alaska) that measure 2′ wide x 4′ long, some rigid foam insulation and clear vinyl window insulation (3′ wide on a roll, cut to length – like batting – and 10 mil thick) from my local hardware store. I use 2 tables because I quilt large quilts and I cannot have any drag on the fabrics as I am quilting them – I need a perfectly flat surface for several feet, all around the sewing machine.
Marguerita tells me the surface on the finished table is as smooth as teflon! Great job and nice way to build yourself a sewing / quilting table without having to shell out mega bucks for it

Hello ,
Cheap and works great.
Love the idea..
I wanted to post that we are making a cheap sewing / craft table for my ‘new’ sewing room.
We are using an old door we removed .. & adding metal legs. My oldest dd made for herself in her small house. She set her small file cabinet under one side & legs at the other end.
I have seen where you can make these to also attach the door / table to the wall with a hinge & simply fold down when not in use .
I like your idea! Now THATS what I call recycling! I wonder, I am in the process of purchasing vintage singers that can sew heavy materials like denim and I need at least two ready to go at all times, one for sewing the seams and the other for the heavy top stitiching with contrasting thread that goes on the outside. Does your door idea look like it could accomodate two machines on the same door/table/thinggy? That would be great if it could work!
If you’d like your quilting table to be higher, here’s an easy solution: Buy a package (4 ea) of plastic bed risers. I got mine for $4.99 at Linens & Things. Simply put one under each table leg and you’ve gained a few inches. This is a much more comfortable height, especially when cutting quilts.
