Fabric Wall Appliques Technique
Today’s feature is from ThisIsLoveForever with a tutorial for Fabric Wall Appliqués – Weekend Wall Project:
Basically, it involves covering fabric in liquid starch and using a brayer to roll it onto the wall for a temporary wallpaper. I thought it would be cool to cut motifs out of fabric and brayer it onto the painted wall. I chose a really over the top rose fabric because I love to use old, stodgy fabrics in modern ways.
Here’s what you do:
Cut motifs out of a floral fabric in various sizes and shapes.
Dip each floral piece in liquid starch and wring out excess liquid.
You have complete control over the design and reminds me of paint stenciling on the walls–except this is a lot easier and no painting talent is required! Another cute idea for putting to good use those vintage tablecloths in your collection.
I would prewash the fabric first before cutting out appliqués, this way when the pieces get a bit grungy they can just be peeled off, washed and reapplied.
As mentioned in the tutorial, this is great for apartment dwellers or renters since the decoration is only temporary.
For a homemade liquid starch recipe, you can try this one (minus the lavender oil): Homemade Lavender Starch Recipe or crinoline stiffener recipe would also do the trick–it’s a starch recipe that includes sugar (some prefer this kind of starch). You can try them both and just go with the one that works best for your project–or simply pick some ready-made starch up from the store.

I saw this tip years ago somewhere, but I live in Africa and we can’t get liquid starch. So I’m really excited to try this with the homemade starch recipes. Thanx, TipNut!
