Simple to make and surprisingly durable, painted canvas used as a floor mat adds graphic punch to a room. We started by choosing printed designs and photocopying them. The decorative patterns were reflected onto the canvases with a projector (available from art-supply and crafts stores) then each design was traced and painted. We found that simple, high-contrast patterns worked best.

The idea is to paint pre-primed canvas with latex paint then use a projector to pencil your chosen pattern over the background color. Paint the design with a different color of latex paint, allow to dry, cover with a matte varnish (to make the piece durable), finish off the edges and voila! perfect piece for your floor.

A piece of thin foam padding is recommended for under the mat to make it non-slip.
