35+ Free Afghan Patterns

There are loads of patterns on the net for afghans, but you know me–I’m a bit fussy . Here are my favorite picks of what I’ve found online (both knitting and crochet), and wow–many of these are gorgeous! There are a few throws and lapghans included but they’re easily adjusted to a fuller size if you want. All are free with some including a pdf to download and tuck away in your files. I’ve separated them into two separate groups for browsing. Enjoy!

Snowboarder’s Throw ^[1]: Fun design using 4 colors of yarn, finished size measures 45″ wide x 60″ long.

Quadrant ^[2]: A great project for beginners, finished size measures 31″ x 31″ but easy enough to make bigger if you prefer.

Rainbows & Hearts ^[3]: 46″ x 64″ long and made with yarn in colors of light pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and dark pink.

Zig Zag ^[4]: Four colors of yarn are used, “Intermediate” skill level and is 52″ x 66″ when done.

Sunscape ^[5]: Measures approximately 50″/127 cm wide x 64″/162.5 cm long when finished.

All-American Denim Stripes ^[6]: 50 x 70 inches, not including Fringe. Skill Level marked as Beginner.

Striped Texture ^[7]: Measures approximately 40-inches x 60-inches, pdf download.

Greenway ^[8]: (pdf) Two rows of cluster stitch combine to form pretty, daisy-shaped blocks of color.

Dublin Country ^[10]: Three panel designs: Post & Shell; Shell; Basketweave. Measures approximately 45″/114 cm wide x 64″/162.5 cm long.

Vintage Vertical Stripe ^[11]: A great stash buster and works up fast.

The Mommy Blanket ^[12]: This is built up from strips which use front-post stitches to achieve a woven effect.

Extraordinary Squares ^[13]: Made by attaching squares of a simple stitch (dc), a pretty edging (dc, sc + picot), then attaching pretty vintage doilies

Weekend In Stockholm ^[20]: Dozens of squares in assorted colors are made then stitched together and finished off with a scalloped border.

Chevron ^[22]: Worked in three colors, the stripes can be made as thin or as wide as you like.

Lacy V-Stitch Ripple ^[25]: A simple yet elegant design made in worsted weight yarn but can use lighter weight if you wish. Sample is 30″ x 32″ but can be easily adjusted for larger sizes.

Swedish Embroidery ^[28]: Design on design creates this richly textured project. First, you cable stitch panels and then using two strands of yarn, weave yarn through the nubs to overlay a design.

Lacy Chunky ^[29]: Made with a very open lace pattern in a super soft chunky 100% virgin wool yarn.

Zig Zag Spread ^[37]: A fun & colorful project worked on US 10 circular needles and gauge is 4″ = about 23 stitches.
