I read somewhere fruitflies hate peppermint. I desperately took Dr. Bronner's Magic soap and washed all our countertops with it. We had to have about 1000 fruitflies upon the return of a vacation. Within 2 days they were all gone. We got rid of the source, but cleaning all the surfaces with the peppermint soap totally eradicated the problem. We had been trying to use vinegar to trap them for weeks and it wasn't making much of a dent. But that venus fly trap worked wonders! And the plant was very happy, at least until all the fruit flies disappeared! If you can find one, try it out.
