George Foreman Grill Cleaning Tip
Here’s a cleaning hack for those of us with George Foreman Grills (as well as similar grills):
- After cooking, unplug the grill and lay three layers of wet paper towel across the hot plates (completely cover the plates). Close the lid and enjoy your meal.
- When ready for cleanup, remove the paper towels and wipe the grill clean with a fresh wet cloth or sponge.
The moisture and steam created by placing the wet towels between the hot plates loosens up the gunk and stubborn bits to make the cleanup a lot easier. If things are particularly stubborn and messy, finish up with a nylon scrubber or the plastic cleaning tool that came with the grill.
When preparing dishes that you know will create a nasty mess, you can first lightly spray the grill plates with olive oil before placing the food down. This will help with the cleanup afterward as well.

I’ve been using the scraper to clean it up immediately after a meal, and it never gets everything out.
Now I can enjoy my meal when it’s still hot, instead of cleaning the grill!

I have a large, thick sponge that I fill with soapy water. That really makes a difference with the top plate.
I don’t have a much trouble cleaning the plates as I do the area where the juices and fats run out. I’m sure I’m missing something when it comes to cleaing this area of the grill. I lay my dishrag in the grill after cooking in it. I lost the drip cup long ago. I just put the front edge over a paperplate to catch the drips.
This works excellent for me as I do not have a scraper. Perfect if you use it 2 – 3 times a day like I do !
I have found to clean my George Forman the easiest is to spray on some white vinegar while it’s still plugged in and hot and just wipe everything off with a clean sponge or dish cloth works great!!!
Where have you been for the last several years when I needed your tip????? I closed the 3 wet paper towels into the grill after I used it this afternoon, and it cleaned up like a charm after I finished eating! I do not recommend spraying the grill with cooking oil (Pam or similar) as I tried that previously and it made it worse — I had to use my fingernails to scrape it off of the plates. Thanks for making clean-up easier.
My favorite way to cook on the George Foreman is with Foil. I make packets and put it right on the plates. This is especially nice for fish. I’ll put slices of lemon down, then the fish on top of that, then another layer of lemon. Wrap it all up, then grill. It gets steamed in lemon juice, so lots of flavor, and cleanup? What cleanup?
Never spray Pam or the like on non-stick surfaces. It is against manufacturer’s recommendations and forms a micro-grunge that is super sticky, defeating the non-stick properties of the cookware entirely. If you must spray – use it directly on the food, so that the microscopic particles attach to the food and spread out, and not become one with the grill.
OMG I have been using my Foreman for a few years now, and always dreaded cleaning it. So tonight I tried the three wet paper towels after I used it, and it worked G-R-E-A-T!!!! I will definately remember this tip!
