Today’s feature is from Goods 4 Girls, Making The World A Better Place - One Pad At A Time:

Goods 4 Girls was started to seek out donors to sew or purchase new, reusable menstrual pads for donations to areas of Africa where these products are needed most. Providing reusable supplies not only provides a more environmentally friendly alternative for these young women (in areas of adequate water supply for washing), it reduces their dependence on outside aid organizations to continue providing for their monthly needs.

Please read the site for complete details, this donation program was initiated to provide a greener alternative to Proctor & Gamble’s disposable pad program.

If you’d like to sew up a bunch to donate, there’s a free pattern list here. There’s also this pattern that was previously mentioned on Tipnut - Free Pattern for Washable Feminine Menstrual Pads (see note below about adding a waterproof barrier).

Requests:

  1. Follow one of the many patterns listed on the Patterns page. Make sure the pad pattern includes “wings”.
  2. Select a fabric that is cotton flannel and include a waterproof barrier in the pad.
  3. Choose a fabric pattern that is simple. Solids, stripes, checked or other simple patterns are what we are looking for. Keep in mind that some “fun” patterns may be considered offensive in other cultures.

If you’re not a sewer or would rather donate cash, you can do that too.

If you’re interested in reusable feminine pads for your own use or would like to learn more about their benefits, here’s some good information.

Found via PlanetGreen - thanks!
