Homemade Herbal Carpet Freshener Recipe

This makes a big batch of carpet freshener that will last quite awhile. You can cut the amounts down if you like until you find your favorite blend. To give yourself a small variety to choose from, you could split the recipe in three then add three different herbal fragrance choices to each container/mix.
Homemade Herbal Carpet Freshener
Ingredients:
6 cups baking soda
3 cups dried lavender buds/flowers*
1 cup cornstarch
Directions:
- Mix well and store in an airtight plastic container (a clean icecream pail works great). Set aside for a couple days before using. Sprinkle generously on carpet and let sit for one hour before vacuuming.
Alternative Recipes
- Cloves & Cinnamon (50/50 mix or whatever you prefer)
- Lavender & Rosemary (50/50 mix or whatever you prefer)
- Dried Mint Leaves
- Eucalyptus
- Potpourri
Crush the herbs or flowers up a bit first before adding to the recipe.
Using Essential Oils
Instead of using dried herbs, you can substitute with essential oils, experiment with amounts for best results. Make sure to mix it in the recipe thoroughly and let sit for a few days before using.

I used cloves in the recipe and could not stand the smell with cloves it does not smell good but I may try it with a different ingredient
I would skip the baking soda & cornstarch, using just dried herbs is better. THe BS & CS stay in your carpet for a LONG TIME collecting TONS OF DIRT. I found this out after removing carpet to reveal our wood floors.
The idea of carpet freshener is to vacuum it up after it sits in the carpet for a bit. If you leave it in the carpet it will only make the carpet dirtier.
I’ve gotten good results with adding concentrated drops of herbal extracts –lavender and cedar, to the hot cleaning solution in my steam-vac carpet cleaner. This works great! Also have used orange extract –very inexpensive if you buy the big bottle, as sold in some stores for baking. Smart and Final has a good price.
thank you Trisha this is a great idea, one I am going to definitely try…
