Homemade Oilcloth Lunch Bags

Picture of Oilcloth Lunch Bag [tumblingblocks.net] - Tipnut.comToday’s feature is from Tumbling Blocks with a tutorial for How To Make An Oilcloth Lunch Bag:

Make Your Sack Lunch, a lunch bag tutorial

You will need:

  • 1/4 yard (not fat) oilcloth. I got mine at Sew Mama Sew. Modern oilcloth is pretty much like vinyl and not oiled cloth
  • 1/4 yard thin batting
  • 1/4 yard other plastic fabric for lining. I used a shower curtain because I had it left over from making sit-upons.
  • 3.5 in piece of velcro

Whipping up some crafty lunch bags not only saves you money by making your own, it also helps out with the recycling efforts–less paper and plastic to throw out. There’s also this homemade lunch bag that is a little more unique in design.

I’m a “vintage” sewer! For years, while my children were going through school, I made lunch bags out of the “oil cloth” table cloths. You know the ones; you use them on picnic tables, your kitchen table, etc. These would just get washed with the supper dishes, allowed to air dry, then refilled the next morning—ready for another school day. These table cloths are so inexpensive, and they can usually be found at the dollar stores. I love how all these “vintage” standards are coming back with fresh twists on them. Since we’re all in another Great Depression, I’m hopeful that some of us “vintage” savers and nickel-squeezers will be able to help this generation!
