Open For Business Sign - Tipnut.comQuick, tell me what time your bank opens and closes on Mondays? What about Fridays? How about the video store…does it close at 11 p.m. on Wednesdays or is that Sundays?

The places of business I frequent on a regular basis have different hours of operation on different days and this can be quite the trick to memorize all of them — for each place. There are plenty of times that I’ve sat in a parking lot for half an hour waiting for the bank to open (or the grocery store or the postal outlet…etc…) because I remembered the opening time wrong. Frustrating!

Here’s the system I’ve come up with:

Nearly every place of business has a pamphlet, a business card, a sheet of paper, an advertisement, a website…something…that details their hours of operation. Clip out the hours, glue to an index card and file in a box. Or pin on the bulletin board. Or cut down and slip into a business card holder used just for this purpose. Or add to your household rolodex. Lots of ways to keep these centralized with quick & easy access.

A few places of business I keep track of:

  • Banks
  • Library
  • Local postal outlet (to pick up packages)
  • Hair salon
  • Grocery stores
  • Video store
  • Doctor’s office

It really doesn’t take much effort to organize this, but it has saved me from:

  • Looking up phone numbers then calling to find out the hours (and navigating your way through the automated phone system…grrrrr)
  • Wasting time by arriving too early or too late
  • Having to wait until the next day to make an appointment because I called too late in the day (which then postpones a “To Do” to the next already busy day)

I like posting a couple of my “hot spots” on the bulletin board so I can see at a glance what the hours are, but everything else is ready and organized in the household rolodex.

This really helps with route planning on errand days too, so much easier to plan an efficient schedule.
