How To Clean A Toilet – Really Well
Here are a few hints and tips I’ve collected to clean a toilet, meshed in with instructions on how to clean the toilet from top, down and all around.
This is NO ONE’S favorite job I’m sure. Yuck.
How To Clean A Toilet
Toilet Bowl Tips:
*Use your favorite cleaner or for toilet stain toughies, try one of the below methods:
- Plop a couple denture cleaning tablets in the toilet bowl and soak overnight to clean. Scrub in the morning then flush.
- Pour a tablespoon or two of orange Tang powder crystals in the toilet, swoosh around, soak for an hour or overnight, then flush.
- Pour a cup or so of bleach in the bowl, swish around and soak overnight.
For hard to remove water lines (mineral and hard water deposits) on the inside of the bowl, a few different tips:
- First empty the toilet bowl water enough so that the water level is well below the stained line.
- To lower the water level either dump a pail of water in the bowl or turn the water off (tap behind tank) and flush down what’s in the tank.
- Soak paper towels or toilet paper with vinegar, then firmly stick the wet vinegar towels around the inside of the bowl, covering the stain. Let it soak for several hours, remove paper towels then try scrubbing with cleaner.
- Make a paste of Borax and vinegar and apply generously to ring, let sit for a few hours then scrub clean.
- Try a nylon scrub pad with Barkeeper’s Friend or ZUD
- Use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
- Wet the stain line well then rub gently with a wet pumice stone. Rubbing too hard or with a dry stone on a dry stain line will scratch the porcelain. Be careful.
Do a thorough cleaning when washing the toilet
Don’t forget to:
- Regularly remove all toilet lid and tank covers as well as floor mats to launder.
- Scrub the bowl vigorously and scrub well right up under the rim.
- Take a small scrub brush (old toothbrush works perfectly) and scrub the toilet lid hinges with cleaner too. Slide your wash cloth underneath the hinges–gross!
- With cleaner wipe the top, underside and edges of lid as well as attack the toilet handle with cleaner (think about it).
- Wipe the tank lid and the tank itself with cleaner.
- Wipe the base of the toilet all around from back to front and from top to bottom, get right into the grooves of the porcelain. Scrub the floor all around the toilet from back to front, pay close attention to the crevice where the toilet and floor meet.
- After toilet is cleaned, flush for clean water. If you used a toilet scrub brush, add some bleach to the bowl and let the toilet brush sit and soak in it for awhile to clear out the grodies before putting the brush away.
Important:
Wash the cleaning cloths and rags separately from the rest of your towels and laundry and only use those cloths for the toilet and surrounding area. Your family, and your visitors, will thank you.

Okay we all hate scrubbing toilets…but I just bought a new toilet seat/lid and love it! It has two “dials.” You turn the dials and the toilet seat easily lifts off. I throw it in the shower and hose it down. While I have the toilet seat/lid off I scrub down the toilet, no more hinges getting in the way. I bought it at Wal-Mart in Canada.
Oh now that’s interesting! I’ll have to check out it here and see what I find. It would be so nice not to deal with those dratted hinges! lol
Thanks for the tip
I have used this method for years and its amazing for toliet bowl stains. Take a pumice stone and let it sit in the toliet for 5 min or so- then scrub stains away. Its cheap and lasts a very long time. Be sure to keep it away from the one used on your feet!
use a pumice stone on the hard water mineral deposit ring and it will come right off. Do it lightly or it might scratch..but it works!
BE VERY CAREFUL if you use bleach to clean a toilet! Make sure it is completely flushed away before you use the commode again. The combination of bleach and urine creates a deadly gas! Better yet — don’t use bleach at all. There are plenty of other great suggestions here.
Just a little tip- bleach etches porcelain, so don’t leave it sit for too long! You won’t see the etching inside your toilet, but it will get stained and dirty MUCH faster once it happens!
