How To Make A Terrarium
Today’s feature tip is from Inhabitat with the tutorial HOW TO: Make your own terrarium
I found a large, clear, sphere-shaped glass bowl at a floral supply shop. A glass vessel of this shape is called a “rose bowl” and they come in many different sizes. Mine happens to have a 15″ diameter at the widest point. Part of the success of these types of container gardens is providing for good drainage. This is because the glass container does not have a bottom drainage hole like a regular flower pot.
Simple step-by-step instructions are included, what a great idea! I found this tip on The Bargain Queen Blog where you’ll find more DIY projects.

This ia not a true terrarium since it does not incorporate a lid. A terrarium should have a tight fitting lid that allows humidity to build up inside the enclosure and it becomes self watering. That is the whole point behind a terrarium is that, except for the light needs, it is self suffiencient and does not need to have the lid removed.

Terrariums don’t have to be airtight, some instructions in fact specify an air opening is needed for proper circulation and to prevent mold growth. This project can accomplish both air tight and non-sealed by just covering with a lid or plate if you want a sealed terrarium.
