I live a ways out of town, so transporting home frozen food before it thaws can be a challenge. Canvas grocery totes are a great alternative to the standard store plastic bags, but they don’t help with my frozen food dilemma.

This insulated shopping bag with its Velcro closure was the answer. I can load up all the food I need to keep cold (or hot for that matter), seal up the top, and everything stays the right temp for the ride home.

Not only is the bag nice and sturdy, it’s lined with insulating batting to help groceries stay hot or cold. Simple to sew and materials required are basic: fabric for exterior, lining and pocket, insulating batting, cotton webbing (for handles), velcro and an optional cardboard or plastic piece for removable bottom.

Tutorial has lots of pictures and instructions to walk you through the project step-by-step.

Please visit the site listed above for all the details, nice project! Also see this big list of reusable grocery bag patterns.

If you drive very far or have other errands before coming home , put a cooler in your car for the frozen foods…I keep a few yogurt containers frozen in my freezer to put in the cooler saves on wasting ice. Hope that helps Evie
