Kitchen Motif Designs For Kitchen Towels: Vintage Embroidery Patterns
Here is the latest set of patterns that I’ve chosen from my collection for this round of vintage embroidery pattern freebies: Kitchen Motif Designs For Kitchen Towels. Each Wednesday I’ll upload one pattern from the set for you to download and add to your collection. This pattern is from the 1940’s and I think they are lovely and perfect for the kitchen. Here are the pattern details (the first free pattern is at the bottom):
Kitchen Motifs: Designs For Kitchen Towels
In This Pattern: There are six motifs to be used on kitchen towels. They are to be done in cross stitch and the simplest of embroidery stitches.
Materials Needed: (Use 36 inch material unless directed otherwise.) Use dish toweling for towels; linen, muslin, percale, flour sacking, gingham or a similar material for other articles. Use six strand or perle cotton for embroidery. Towel: 1 yard or a regulation towel.
To Place Motifs: Center one motif about two inches above edge of a towel.
To Embroider Pattern: Work in the colors suggested under Color Schemes and embroider as follows:
- Crosses–cross stitch
- Continuous lines–outline stitch
- Broken lines–running stitch
- Dots–French knots or fine satin stitch
- Single lines–single stitch
- Loops–lazy daisy stitch
Color Schemes: Work motifs in three shades of one color working the fruit or vegetables and lettering in the darkest shade, the cross stitch in the next shade and the rest of the motif in the lightest shade or work in a variety of colors as follows:
- Cherries–red or yellow or both
- Pears–yellow, yellow green or light brown
- Tomatoes–red
- Leaves–green
- Stems–green or brown
- Lettering–black, brown, green or red
- Cross Stitch–black, a color to contrast or harmonize with fruit or any color desired
- Flowers on Dishes–in various colors with yellow or black centers and green leaves and stems

Printing Instructions:
- Save the pattern to your desktop first (right click, save as…), open the file, select “Print”, uncheck anything like “Maintain Aspect Ratio” and “Fit To Page” then print.
- These will all fit on an 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of paper.

Please Note:
The original patterns were printed “backwards” or “mirrored” because you had to lay them face down then iron onto fabric, this time I flipped the patterns since most would be tracing over top.
