Make Your Own Microwave Popcorn – Cheap!
Today’s feature is from The New York Times with Microwave Popcorn, Minus the Ripoff, plus there are a few more popcorn goodies included below:
All you do is take popcorn — say, 1/4 cup — and put it in a brown paper bag (preferably the large lunch bags sold in supermarkets ), then fold over the top a few times (some people recommend staples, but it seems the bags can catch fire that way and why risk it; the staple is unnecessary), then pop until the kernels stop, which is high heat for two minutes in many cases.
I also caught this in the comments section:
Why bother with the bag? You can pop the popcorn right in a bowl, covered with a plate. Just need a closed environment so that the water inside the kernels turns to steam and pops. . .You can put flavorings and oils at the bottom of the bowl, or season afterwards. And there’s no waste! Source
Check the site for full details. I also want to point out this Perfect Popcorn Recipe (from Simply Recipes) which is a step-by-step how to for making popcorn the old fashioned way (saucepan, peanut oil & on the stove). I haven’t made popcorn this way in ages, boy does this one bring back memories!

Once I tried it without a special bag, and my popcorn burned, but only half the kernals were popped. A good investment would be just to get a popcorn popper. They work just fine and last a million years in the right care.
Good suggestion, Katlyn. I bought an air popper at a garage sale five years ago for $1 and use it regularly. Although I may try to popcorn from the saucepan for nostalgia’s sake.
The hot oil, no mater how bad for you, adds the special flavor. So eat it less often but make it a real treat.
my husband & I love popcorn…I never thought to make it in a plain brown bag…we will give this a try!!! thanks for the tip….
