How To Make Potato Baker Bags

Crafty Idea - Tipnut.comPerfectly baked potatoes using a microwave and a fabric bag? Cute idea!

  • This simple bag creates a “just right” baked potato in your microwave. The inside is well done, yet moist, and the skin remains tender.
  • The bag will cook one to four medium sized
    potatoes at once.
  • Simply wash and dry your Potatoes. DO NOT PRICK!!
  • Wrap the potatoes in a paper towel and place in bag.
  • Microwave as instructed by the microwave manufacturer. Time will vary per microwave.
  • When serving, do not cut with knife, simply use a fork. potatoes will be very fluffy.
  • Let the bag air dry. ENJOY!!

Caution: Please do not leave unattended and make sure to use only 100% cotton materials. From a comment below: If your microwave is too hot to use the bags, either turn down in temperature or don’t use the bags (sparking, small burn hole problems in the fabric, or can cause fire).

I am looking for potato bag holder that you put potatoes in or onions. I have alot of microwave bags just not the bags to hold a 10 or 20 lb bag of potatoes in.

  2. TipNut says:

Hi Dawn, is this what you’re looking for: onion sack pattern

  3. Meredith says:

This seems really bizarre to me for some reason. Have you heard of anyone trying this?

  4. TipNut says:

Hi Meredith, these do work nicely but there can be a couple problems:

The bag wasn’t made with all cotton materials (fabric or padding), this can cause sparking or small burn holes.

The microwave is too hot to use the bags, either turn down in temperature or don’t use the bags (sparking or small burn hole problems in the fabric).

I do this inside oven mitts that I bought from the dollar store just for this purpose – works GREAT – ( an inexpensive tea cosy would work well also!) and could be a great substitute for those who do not sew.

(I sew – but can’t be bothered to make a special bag as I’m SO busy!)

  6. SuZ says:

the baked potato bag works great-I make (all 100% cotton) & sell them in my etsy shoppe…
I gave one to my Mother (who is 84) and she LOVES it…you can do sweet potatoes too…and warm up muffins as well !!!

There are no pics. Could you show the pics?

  8. TipNut says:

Hi Virginia, looks like the pictures are down at the moment, here’s an archived page that shows them: Potato Baker Bags.

    Question for “Andrea”…

Your suggestion for using oven mitts sounds great. Were they all cotton, or what? I’d like to try this!

  10. Paula S Bass says:

Thank you for archiving the instructions with photos. I quilt and sew but sometimes photos are so much easier. blessings, paula

I had some request that I make a potato bag and i never heard of it. I went on your site and was delighted to find you have a pattern…but the pictures do not show up for the pattern. is there anything you can do for this…maybe try e-mailing me the pattern?

  12. Jen says:

I am also having trouble viewing the pictures, Is there anything you can do for this…or try to e-mail the pattern to me? Thanks!

  13. TipNut says:

I updated the link to the web archive, the pictures show up for me. Check it out and let me know if you still have problems viewing the project.

(the new link is at the top in the post)

  14. Gale says:

I am wonering if there is a “green” batting, other tahn cotton that is made from natural sources, that can be used in the microwave baked potato bags?

  15. Connie Yeagley says:

I was told that you cannot use colored fabric for the inside. Must you always use muslin??

  16. Nancy Lamps says:

Thank you for this pattern for the potato bags. There are two broken links for the picture directions. I am going to teach a class at church, and it would be great to have all of your pictures for a demo. I thought the fabrics should all be 100% cotton, but a women was selling some at a craft show with cotton blends.

  17. Needle2pin says:

I am unable to get the applique. There is a problem with the page.

    • TipNut says:

The page is only available on the webarchive now rather than the author’s websites so things may get slow or unavailable (common issue with the webarchive). I did find the zip download for the potato baker applique, direct link is here: Applique–potato baker bag (download will start).

If that stops working it’s probably just because the webarchive is having issues and you’ll need to try again later.
