Mending Small Tears In Upholstery
Mending Small Tears
Minor tears in smooth upholstery can be repaired by first cutting a strip of adhesive tape somewhat longer and wider than the tear itself. Insert the tape behind the tear and then gently pull the torn pieces back into place. Hold a slightly warmed flatiron against the mended spot until the fabric and the tape adhere firmly.
There are also on the market several commercial patching tapes which can be applied in a similar manner.
It is best to have holes and tears in napped fabrics treated by professional whose skill enables them to make almost invisible patches.
How to Mend Rips and Tears in Leather Upholstery
The very softness and pliability which gives leather its appeal is the factor which makes it subject to rips and tears, unless it is treated with care.
- The first step in mending tears is to clip off the fuzz around the edges.
- Then cut a piece of leather, or some other rugged fabric longer and wider than the rip itself, and coat it with furniture glue or nitrocellulose cement.
- Place it underneath the tear.
- Gently pull the edges of the tear together, permitting them to become cemented to the patch beneath.
