Monkey Munch Recipe

If you watch the tv show Jon & Kate Plus 8 on TLC, you know what monkey munch is ;) . If not, this is a snack that both the kids and parents just love. Here’s the recipe for it:

Picture of Monkey Munch [chex.com] - Tipnut.comMonkey Munch

9 cups Chex cereal (any variety)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Stove Method Directions:

  • Measure cereal into a large bowl & set aside.
  • Heat chocolate chips, peanut butter and the butter over low heat until melted. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  • Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal and stir until evenly coated.
  • Pour the mix into a 2 gallon ziploc bag and add powdered sugar, seal bag.
  • Shake bag until everything’s well coated then spread the mix on waxed paper to cool.
  • Refrigerate in an airtight container.

Microwave Method Directions:

  • Place the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter in a microwaveable bowl and melt uncovered on High for 1 minute. Stir.
  • Microwave for another 30 seconds or until mixture is stirred smooth.
  • Stir in the vanilla.
  • Follow the rest of the directions as above in the Stove Method.

You can also find the recipe on the Chex website here.

By the way, I totally love this on the Discovery/TLC website for the Jon & Kate show:

  • Chase 8 kids for 15 minutes putting on 56 pieces of clothing.
  • Cook 16 pancakes
  • Clean 80 sticky fingers
  • Do 5 loads of laundry
  • Make 8 trips to the potty
  • Congratulations, you just got through breakfast.

Can you imagine! LOL!

    I love this show!

Monkey Munch sounds SO good! No wonder those kids love it!

  2. piekid says:

I’ve been making and eating this for YEARS, but we called it “Chex Dog Food”. I don’t know where we got the recipe from, I think it was the side of a Chex box. Or from friends. It really could be either.

  3. TipNut says:

Hi piekid, on the Chex recipe page they have a note that another popular name for this is “puppy food”, that’s very similar to your name for the snack. Dog food doesn’t sound as cute as Monkey Munch though does it, lol!

  4. Stephanie says:

My mom used to make this when I was a kid. She called it people chow, though. Doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s still a huge hit with kids! I make it for mine now and they go nuts over it.

  5. Starr says:

Yep, I’m another one whose family loves this stuff! I really like the name “Monkey Munch” so much better than puppy chow though. That’s what I’m going to call it from now on.

  6. Arielle says:

I have tried making the Monkey Munch with plain Cheerios and it worked exactly the same! Hope that helpfull to anybody who doesn’t have chex cereal!

  7. emhev says:

i absolutely love jon and kate plus eight! they are ordinary people living in an extraordinary circumstance and doing a great job at it! also, while researching a recipe for monkey munch, i came across another name for it, which is Muddy Buddies! too cute!

  8. lam says:

I found it necessary to make an allergen free Monkey Munch for kids allegic to dairy, nuts & eggs. We used plain cheerios, pretzels, Earth Balance soy butter and sunflower seed butter from Trader Joe’s to replace the peanut butter….same proportions worked out just fine…Yum!

  9. Sarah says:

We make this also…people puppy chow…off the side of the box….

only we put the mix into a paper bag with powdered sugar and shake!!! makes it really good :)

  10. Jane says:

muddy buddies is the only name for this snack that is good. every other name is really dumb. i mean, come on, monkey munch? its stupid.

  11. Sheryl says:

    this recipe is sssssooooooo good!
you should try it if you already haven’t.

  12. Kristen says:

Made the munch for a faculty get together here at school…used Coco Puffs instead of Chex and switched it to 8 cups of cereal…even more chocolatey! Love the show too! :)

  13. Kaeli says:

Im 11 years old and i make this whenever i go to partys and its a HUGE hit! Its sooooo easy to make and it takes like 15 min!

  17. Mom2 says:

I will be making it tonight. You would think with all the chocolate and sugar, Kate would not be such a sour puss!!!

  18. Riley says:

I was watching my two year old sister and we got very hungry so I made this and she loved it!! But we modified it a little. I only had like 20 chocolate chips left but I had a whole bag of white chocolate chips so I used the white ones and I used cheerios instead of Chex and I didnt put the powdered sugar on. So we ate it out of the bowl with a spoon and a glass of milk!! It was great!

  19. Cat says:

One of my friends made it and brought it to school, I didn’t get to try it then but our class went CRAZY over it. One of my other friends made some more[after finding the recipe on this website]and I finally got to try it. It’s AMAZING. So delicious. I love chocolate. I may try the cheerio or coco crunch version:]
    Thanks for the recipe!!
    I<3MONKEYMUNCH!!!:]
