Visit Craft-Chick’s livejournal for another opportunity to reach out to Virginia Tech, this one is for quilters: Project HOKIE HOPE

I am an alumna of Virginia Tech (PhD finally finished in 03) and was, with the whole country, horrified by last week’s events on that beautiful campus. In my effort to ease some of my own feelings of sorrow and helplessness, I have started an effort to make Hokie Hope quilts for each of the families who lost a loved one.

Here’s what I’m asking people to contribute:

  • 12 1/2″ blocks, any pattern, in the VT school colors of maroon and orange, plus white/cream and brown/black as accent and background colors.
  • squares of cotton batting at least 16″ square (I can assemble these in a “quilt-as-you-go” technique)
  • backing fabric in coordinating colors at least 16″ square.
  • prepared binding in coordinating colors.

Also visit this group of knitters over at Knitting For Virginia Tech, they’re requesting knitted items for support of Viriginia Tech, all kinds of items can be sent:

Since knitting is such an instinct for all of us, we were moved to do something to help out the VT community. We thought it would be a great show of support to knit up items like hats, scarves, mittens, whatever you like…and donate them to the incoming/returning community of students at Virginia Tech.

Ways you can contribute:

  • Knit Something. Of course. You knew that. Hats, Scarves, blankets. Wrist warmers are probably a hot item for students these days. Anything else you can think of that college students would love. (And don’t forget those teachers too!)
  • Get all designey and write your own pattern. You can distribute it at your SnB or send it to us to post here on the blog. We’ll make sure to put your name on the pattern.
  • Get all designey and make us a button. You’ll notice on the right rail there are some buttons you can steal for fun or to link from your blog to ours.
  • Spread the word. Tell everyone at your SnB. Organize mini KAL/Sit Ins. Be a point person for your group if not everyone has web access. And don’t forget the power of the web. Post to other craft boards and groups if you can.
  • Inspire. If you join the blog, post about your project progress. We’d love to see how everyone is doing.
  • Donate Yarn. If you can’t knit fast enough, but have extra yarn or stash yarn, let us know. I can match up yarn donors with folks who don’t have the spare cash to spend on yarn for the project.

There’s also this notice from the other day for knit & crochet squares: Reach Out To Virginia Tech With Knit & Crochet

The internet community sure can accomplish some beautiful things :)
