13 Darling Pillowcase Dresses To Sew: {Patterns & Tutorials}

This style of dress is not only adorable for young girls, but also comfy to wear with lots of room to accommodate playtime. Traditionally they were made with pillowcases but they can also be made with fabric panels. Here are a dozen different ways you can make them, a few are similar but embellished with slight differences so I included them to give you a bit of creative inspiration. These are so easy to make and suitable for beginner sewers. Have fun!

Pillowcase Dress Tutorial ^[1]: Neck has a fabric tie or elastic casing. Features armhole binding (with either fabric or double fold bias tape) and contrasting fabric along the hem (optional). Free pattern to download.

Double Layer Dress ^[2]: Two different fabrics are used for the layers, (top is linen and bottom is silky) and are sewn together around the top and armholes. Neck casing with ribbon tie (bow on one side).

Vintage Linen ^[3]: Made with a vintage pillowcase that has a pretty lace or embroidered hem, casing at neck with elastic and fabric (or bias tape) ties on each shoulder.

Decorative Trim Hem ^[4]: Tutorial via free pdf download, has elastic neck casing, ribbon ties (at each shoulder) and ric rac added to the bottom hem. Made from a pillowcase.

Ribbon Waist ^[5]: Arm holes are finished with binding, ribbon is sewn on each end of elastic for top neck casing (ties on each shoulder), decorative ribbon around the waist (optional).

Retro Ruffles ^[6]: A large pillowcase is used for this project and is suitable for toddler size 18 months and under. Button & loop at back of neck.

Tiered Style ^[7]: Fabric pieces are needed for the bodice, 2nd tier and third tier plus an 1/8 yard for the tie. Single fold bias tape is used around the armholes.

Shirred ^[8]: The waist is shirred with elastic thread, a contrasting fabric band is added at the bottom hem (optional), ribbon or fabric is used for the tie around the neck.

Pleated Bow ^[9]: Pleats are sewn across the top at the neck, v-split back with button and loop closure and fabric bow pinned to the front.

Lace Straps ^[10]: This is a nightgown but the idea can be used for a dress as well, stretch lace is added across the top and used as shoulder straps.

Ruffled Hem ^[11]: A strip of fabric is gathered then sewn to the bottom hem, ribbon is run through the top casing and ties on each shoulder.

Ruffled Elastic Collar ^[12]: Bias tape around the armholes and hem, a separate collar piece is made then sewn to dress, elastic run through casing.
