Quick Tips For Laundry
Here are a few tips for laundry that were previously published on Tipnut as Quick Tips that are being moved to this single page.
- Before washing items with grass stains, try dabbing a generous amount of vinegar into the stain first. Launder as usual. This should help lift the stain right out.
- If you have Liquid Paper or white correction fluid smudged on your clothes, try applying a bit of suntan lotion to a slightly damp cloth then blotting over the stain, gently rubbing with the grain or weave of the fabric if possible. Repeat as necessary until you’ve removed the stain. Be careful with delicate fabrics though and make sure it’s a clothing item that will easily wash out the suntan lotion.
- Ironing Embroidered Linens: Place the linen with the embroidered side down over a white terry towel then press (wrong side up). This will help preserve the direction of the stitching without flattening it. You could also do this in reverse: first lay the embroidered side up, then place a terry towel on top, then press.
- Try adding a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle when washing plastic table cloths. This will help them dry soft and pliable.
- Before washing new colored or print fabrics or new items of clothing, try soaking first in 1 tsp Epsom salts to one gallon of water. Helps prevent fading as well as dyes running in future washes.
- You can use a 50/50 mix of vodka and water to spray on suit jackets, coats, and other clothing items to freshen the armpit area. Lightly mist or spray the vodka mix underneath the arms on the clothing item, allow to dry then store until needed. If your jackets and clothing items are otherwise clean, this will help save money on dry cleaning costs.

I just wanted to make a comment and I don’t know where. Actually I wanted to ask a question. How long do you soak the items in this solution?

Hi Pauline, I don’t have any firm rules or guidelines on this. But I shoot for about an hour or so. I think as long as the fabric has a chance to soak in the solution it’s fine.

Thank you. Being a sewist and a quilter in particular, makes this a great tip. Much needed.

When I was a kid, my mom would use hairspray on grass stains.

Hair spray (aqua net)also removes magic marker stains on clothes!! Some times you have to repeat the process but it is worth it! It has worked for me time after time!
