Quick Tips For Organizing

Quick Tips For Organizing - Tipnut.com

  • Organize Pot Lids Neatly: Lids for pots and pans are tricky things to try and keep neatly organized. It never fails that the lid you’re needing is buried way in the back, hiding underneath a pan or two. A kitchen hack you can try is using a plain old dish rack. Just place the rack on a shelf by itself, slide the lids in the slots on the rack. All you have to do is pull the rack out and grab your lid. This is a nice, easy & super cheap way to keep things neat :) . Also see this idea that was sent in: Pot Lid Taming Options.
  • Clipping Magazine Articles: Instead of piling up stacks of magazines, flyers and newspapers because you want to save or clip certain articles when you have time, just tear out the article you want, store the torn clippings in your household inbox or file folder to cut neatly later and toss the magazines, flyers and newspapers (recycle). Really helps cut down on the magazine and newspaper piles. Also see: Ideas For Recycling Magazines
  • Cluttered Refrigerator Notes: With a hole punch handy and a magnetic hook for the refrigerator, it’s easy to keep the refrigerator paper clutter at bay. For the paper items you like to stick on the refrigerator (like school newsletters or team practice times), just give them a quick hole punch and organize it by subject (or date) on one single magnetic hook. It’s so easy to flip through the items to find what you’re looking for and keep the rest of the refrigerator paper free :) .
  • Recycle Coffee Cans: You can use coffee cans to store dry goods such as cereals, flour, rice. They’re also great to store craft bits such as lace and ribbon pieces, store nut shells and even stash away kitty litter in the trunk of the car. When washing the coffee tins to prepare for use, make sure to dry very well inside so that rust doesn’t appear.
  • Utilize The Pantry Door: Attach a hanging door shoe bag to the back of the pantry door to organize packets of dried soup, herbs, spices, powder mixes, small bottles, etc. Make sure to use a clear plastic shoe organizer so you can easily see what each pocket contains. I mentioned this tip earlier for storing all those “junk drawer breeder” items (see Organizing Tip: Over the Door Shoe Bags), but it occurred to me that this is a perfect solution for pantries too.
  • Organize Take Out Menus & Coupons: Keep a file folder for menus from your favorite restaurants as well as restaurant flyers and coupons you receive in the mail. Highlight the dishes that your family liked and note the items you didn’t care for. This not only saves time from flipping through the yellow pages, it also keeps your coupons organized and saves you a bit of money since they’re not forgotten in a pile of flyers.

My sister only has garbage pickup once a week so when she gets food that can’t go into the compost she puts it in a coffee can and stores it in the freezer so no smell all week in her garbage. Then on garbage day she tosses it all in at once.

Great idea Kansas Allen! I never thought of using it for stuff like that. Thanks :) .

We use one on the inside of our coat closet door for easy, organized access to mittens, hats, scarves, etc.

    Question please.

Coffee now comes in the plastic containers which I really hate to throw out but don’t know how to get the coffee odor out. Seems it gets ingrained in the plastic. I’ve tried baking soda, washing several times in the dishwasher but the odor is still there–same as garlic containers. Seems they never lose their odor. Any Ideas as to how to remove the odors???

No ideas off the top of my head Nancy, but if I think of something I’ll post in here. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Maybe some type or vinegar/water solution? Or lemon juice/water? Just an idea … haven’t tried it.

I would try stuffing it with some newspaper to absorb the odor or a small sachel of baking soda.

Also, Costco’s brand of coffee (which is delicious) still comes in a regular can. I don’t know for how long before they switch to plastic, but I’ve been hording empty cans for about two years!

I tear off the paper, paint the can white and stencil decorations. They hold Christmas ornaments, garland, etc.

We use one for hats, mittens, and scarves too. You can even clothespin damp items to the outside of the plastic ‘bin’ part while they dry out. I haven’t lost a glove in two winters now.

We use a heavy-duty clear one on the back of the door of our home office. It holds all those random electronic tidbits: cell phone cords, backup camera battery, plastic case with the extra SD card, etc etc etc! I hated all that stuff that just accumulated in a messy pile. The shoe bag is perfect. It has to be heavy duty, though. Electronics tend to be hefty.

Nice blog. Thanks for your tips!

Try using mustard to remove the odor, we used to use mustard on our hands when I worded at Krystals (many many years ago). It was the only thing that would get the onion smell off your hands. I have used it on other things and it worked.

  11. Oh, just wanted to share this. If you are a dog owner. We carry the plastic coffee cans in the car for easy disposal of our “doggy bags”. When we travel with our golden, we are very careful to clean up after him. The plastic bags go into the plastic containers until we can dispose of it all in a trash container.

I put all my pot and pan lids in a drawer. Works great and I can always find what I need!

My husband and I re-did our kitchen on a tight budget. We got all our cabinets from Home Depot (just the basic white ones) I drooled over the fancy slide out drawers in the cabinets but the cost was prohibitive for us. Instead My husband bought drawers sliders and sheets of ‘good on one side’ plywood. He converted some of my cupboards shelve to slide out and i swear the ones with the slide out shelves are the tidiest. Since we had bought different cabinet pulls, we used the cheap plastic ones that came with the cabinets on the shelves to pull the shelves out with. Positioned up not out. I insisted he put a back on these shelves to keep things from falling off. As for my Cookie sheets/baking pans, he devised a simple roman numeral 2 (II)out of scrap plywood to insert into the cupboard. As we were putting it in we wondered how we would secure it but alas he made the measurements so snug, it just wedged in. My cookie sheets and muffin tins slide in sideways (vertical) and my square cake pans stack above and below the vertical. We saved a ton of money doing it this way.
    sorry this is so long
