How To Make A Sun Jar: DIY

Here’s a step-by-step guide to building sun-capturing jars that create outdoor lighting at a fraction of the retail cost.
Our searches for retail sun jars turned up prices ranging from $30-60 per unit. We were able to create all four sun jars for $44.
If you’re not familiar with what a sun jar is, it’s a device that stores sunlight during the day which is then used to power the light at night. Use them out on the deck at night for a pretty decoration (they can give out a lot of light too).
This is a pretty cool DIY project that uses mason canning jars (with clear glass lids) and cheap solar lights (see the article for recommendation). Frost the glass with a can of frosting spray to diffuse the light and if you want the lamps to be colored (as shown in the picture above), you add colored plastic labels from drink bottles to filter the light.
The sun jars cost about $11 each to make, but if you have some mason jars kicking around the house you’ll reduce that to about $7 bucks each (compared to buying the sun jars ready-made at $30 to $60 each).
