Clip Your Cleaning Sponges & Cloths
If you are going to use old face cloths, dish cloths, tea towels or sponges as dust rags or for messy cleaning jobs cut a piece off one corner so they don’t get mixed up with your good items. You’ll recognize them right away.
I have a stash of cloths and sponges used just for cleaning the bathroom that I wash and store separately, clipping them will be a useful way to know at a glance that these guys didn’t get mixed with the good stash by mistake (see How to Clean Household Sponges to make sure your sponges really do get a proper cleaning job).

I did this for awhile also, but I found it a little tedious to check each towel. I now have a box at the bottom of our basement steps (near the laundry room) that I wrote in big, black marker “Dirty Rags”. I keep several stashes of clean rags under the kitchen/bathroom sinks near the other cleaning supplies. If I use a rag to clean the toilet, it goes directly into the box. If it’s used just for a quick counter wipe down, I’ll probably use it again. Once I start to get low on clean rags, I throw them in the laundry on hot, with bleach, by themselves (sometimes with towels I used to dry the dog, but nothing else).
