Tipnut Mailbag: How To Remove Chewing Gum From Clothing
Jane Dane from lavenderridgefarms.com sent in a great remedy she found to remove a wad of chewing gum that was hiding in a shirt pocket–not discovered until after the shirt was washed and dried (eek!)…
How To Remove Chewing Gum From Clothing
I found a really great solution that worked and was easy so I wanted to share this info with you and hope that you will pass it along.
The chewing gum was in a shirt pocket and had been washed and dried before I realized it was there. Most websites recommended using ice and then scraping it off. This one said pour boiling vinegar over the gum and it will make it dissolve.
I couldn’t believe it. It really worked! It also recommended following up with a laundry pretreatment like Shout. I did and you would never know that there had been sticky, gross chewing gum on the fabric.
Thanks for sharing the great tip Jane!

I will have to remember this tip! Stuck gum is so gross!
I like the tip for removing gum from fabric, but HOW do I get it out of my dryer????????It is smeared everywhere.
Use dawn dish detergent on a wet towel and continue to wipe the metal parts of the dryer down until the gum comes up. Then on the plastic parts of the dryer use ice cubes to loosen the gum and then use the same towel with dawn dish detergent to finish cleaning the mess.
This is not hard to do, I did this in 30 minutes after finding my gummy dryer.
Patty I’d try toothpaste, rub it in and wipe off the gum. Toothpaste seems to clean everything!
I’ve used peanutbutter. I don’t remember where I got that one from, but it worked the time I tried it.
To remove gum from inside dryer, WD40. Spray on let soak in for 2-5 minutes. Wipe of in circle with a little pressure. Dry off with a clean soft cloth. Guaranteed. Do not mind the odor, it will dissapate in a little while. If concerned do not use dryer for a couple of hours.
The EASIEST and BEST thing I’ve used to take gum out of the dryer and clothing is a fabric softener sheet.
Just wet the sheet and rub the gum right off the clothing and dryer. SO EASY and personal experience too!!!!! Then wash clothes as usual.
Definitely don’t put WD40 in your dryer – although I love a shot of W on everything for cleaning, I think it will leave some serious smell on the dryer. I spent the morning cleaning a whole pack of dried gum off the dryer using white vinegar and dryer sheets. Basically, pour some white vinegar on the dryer sheet and start wiping… for best results, pour some in and rotate the dryer drum by hand, lettting it soak. Use a soft-bristle brush (like one you use on glasses in the sink) and break up the big stuff. Continue rotating and wiping with the dryer sheets. Use lots of sheets – as they tend to accumulate lots of gum and start breaking down. Finally, I rinsed with some water and wiped down with a Magic eraser. Rinse again – wiping vigorously and feeling with your hand for any additional gum. Finally wipe it all out with a few papertowels. Then, run the first load using some big junk stuff – like towels you dry your car with. Run those through until they look and smell good. I think that it is safe, after that, to run regular clothes through. Thanks everyone for their advice – I just wanted to give back.
I had a note sent in by Lisa who confirms Jeanne’s tip too, she wrote: Quick tip for cleaning gum out of the dryer. Let the dryer cool down so that the gum hardens and is not as sticky. Rub the gum off with used dryer sheets! It really works!
While attending the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California a gentleman offered me a seat on the blanket he’d spread on the street right in front of where the Parade was to pass. I was wearing a new pair of expensive blue jeans. When the parade ended, I pushed up on my knees to get up and my right knee hit the street and picked up a huge wad of chewing gum someone had discarded. Since I was on a two week trip to California, I could do noting but wait until I got home to try to get it out. By that time the gum had hardened. So, what did I do? I grabbed my bottle of GooGone and thoroughly soaked the gummy knee. That allowed me to peel the glob away. Then I squeezed more Goo Gone on what was left of the gum and washed the jeans with my regular detergent in warm water. I had truly thought they those jeans were gonners, but the only thing gone at the end of the wash cycle was the gum! GooGone is an amazing product and it can be used to remove gummy residue from just about everything (stuck on labels, price tags, adhesive and Scotch tape, etc.), from fabrics, glass, windows, mirrors, walls, just about any surface.
