Makeup bags are ideal to give as gifts and they’re quite handy for stashing more than just cosmetics. I took my time selecting this collection of free tutorials, making sure there’s a nice mix of everything: Some simple, some zipped, some large, some small.
There are a couple crochet patterns but the bulk of them are sewing projects. For a treat I also included a few brush rolls at the bottom, these are terrific organizers–especially when traveling.
Note: As always here on Tipnut, I only include crafts that are totally free with no strings attached (no memberships, no logins or emails to submit, etc.). If you come across something that requires a signup, please let me know in the comments area below so I can remove it. Things change so fast on the internet! Lots here, have fun!
Cosmetic Bag / Pouch Projects

Toiletry Pouch: Cute and big enough to hold all you need when traveling.

Makeup Roll/Case: Create a roll-up cosmetics stash w/three interior pockets. The pockets and interior lining are constructed with vinyl so contents can be seen at a glance and spills are easily wiped away. Sample used KAM snaps.

20-Minute: Rounded flap w/ snap closure…great project for beginners!

Boxy: Nice and big, box shaped, and colorful and quirky without being obnoxious.

Oilcloth: 11″x18″ oilcloth, 9″ zipper, thread and a sewing machine. That’s it!

Two Compartments: This tutorial is by video, she shows you how to cut your pieces and assemble.

Potholder: A cute little project made from a potholder, it’s easy!

Crochet/Tapestry Technique: Combines a crochet fabric with a technique to assemble the toiletry bag, which we usually see in the field of sewing. This way of assembling will give us a three-dimensional cube-shaped product.

Round Makeup Case: Another unique project that’s quilted, this one is shaped like a circular tube.

Goofy: These can be whipped up in any size you like, great project for using up pretty bits of fabric scraps.

Fabric Toiletries: Large enough to carry lotions and other necessities. Lined with cotton or oilcloth if you prefer.

Vinyl Makeup Pouch: Now these I like! I can see how useful they would be for traveling.

Rosy Wedge: Fully lined and wedge shaped, has a gusseted bottom. Instructions via pdf download.

Laminated Doily: A thrifted doily is covered with iron-on vinyl and transformed into a sweet little carrier.

The Stash ‘n Go: This opens up flat and that a quick pull of the paracord pulls it all up into a drawstring bag. Shows how to create the template for the size you want.

Origami: Has a drawstring closure at the top and outer pockets to hold small items.

Makeup Brush Organizers

Carrier: Another similar idea, ties closed with fabric straps.

Case: Laminated fabric is used on the inside so it can be wiped clean easily.

Oilcloth Roll: Another easy project using a piece of oilcloth 11.5″ x 22″ and some elastic.

Just wanted to let you know that the **admin edit** site is a bad link; when I click on it, I got a big security warning that it contains malware and will cause trouble if I go there using that link. So you might want to remove this one or let the owner know their site has possibly been hacked recently.
Thanks for all the tips and good ideas…as always.
**From Tipnut: Thanks very much for the heads up Debra, I checked that site and it has been hacked so I’ve removed all listings that referenced it. I appreciate that you took the time to let me know, thank you 🙂
Can hardly wait to make some of these for my self and as gifts
These are lovely ideas – I can’t wait to have a go at some of them. 🙂
I printed out the instructions for the envelope style makeup bag tutorial, however, there is no sizes offered and I do not know what size to make, the pattern. Does anyone know?
Loved your envelope style bag, BUT before I begin, you give measurements of
10″ widening to 12″ on the bottom for the bag body, and then 10″ wide for the envelope top, but no measurement for the height of bag body or the envelope top. Thanks for the great projects!
